Anthony Mackie really flew on the nose of a plane
Marvel has taken the streaming world by storm. By launching riveting limited series such as WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the entertainment franchise has managed to keep fans engaged throughout most of 2021 so far.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, starring Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame and focuses on the government’s efforts to replace Chris Evans’ Captain America.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is full of dangerous stunts that took practice and supervision. In fact, one of the most popular stunts in the series got Mackie to fly in the front of a plane in real life.

Eric Leven, visual effects supervisor at The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, explained how the team pulled it off in a recent interview on Marvel’s YouTube page. He confirmed that Mackie was indeed to land in the front of a plane.
âNot with an airplane in the air, but with an airplane on the ground,â Leven said. “It was something that we – we are planning.”
Previs, or preview, is an animation tool the effects team uses to visualize action sequences before actors and stuntmen have to do them in real life. Once Leven figured out what he wanted the shot to look like, he was able to convince Mackie to pull off the trick.
âSo we saw the kind of video game version of it, where we had kind of a Falcon coming in and just sort of landing on the cockpit of the plane,â Leven said. âAnd we talked with the stunt coordinator and the riggers and got it, ‘I think we can do this for real. We’re going to be on an Air Force base. We have a real plane. And they were wiring Anthony into a travel harness that would have him flying in the spotlight.
The visual effects team used real wingsuit flyers for the action sequence
In the same action sequence, wingsuit flyers can be seen weaving their way through canyons. Leven also confirmed in the same interview that the wingsuit flyers were also real.
âNot only are we working with real people in wingsuits, but Captain Vassant is attached to one of the wingsuit pilots,â Leven revealed.
According to Leven, it’s very common to tie actors together and blow them off a plane.
âIn the story, yes, he’s going to tie it up, and he’s going to jump,â Leven said. âAnd I was talking with the stunt coordinator, and he said, ‘Oh yeah, yeah, we can do it. ⦠We do it all the time. You just tie a guy to another guy, and he’ll hold on real tight and they’ll jump off the plane. ”
‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ ââvisual effects team wanted everything to look real
More than anything, it was important for the visual effects team to make everything as real as possible. So a lot of time and attention went into making each stunt.
âWhat I really wanted to do with these action sequences was, as much as possible, to make things feel like they were grounded in reality,â said Leven. âSo obviously we don’t have Anthony Mackie flying in a real jetpack with real wings. But we want to make it seem like if he was, how would we film that?
