Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis movie costumes are designed by Prada, Miu Miu – WWD
MILAN — Baz Luhrmann’s highly anticipated biopic “Elvis” will have its share of high fashion, courtesy of Prada and Miu Miu.
Miuccia Prada has once again lent her flair for vintage fashion and sophisticated bling – which resonate particularly well with the style of music legend and king of rock ‘n’ roll Elvis Presley and his wife Priscilla – by creating costumes in tandem with Oscar-winning costume designer Catherine Martin for the film directed by Luhrmann.
The film, which will premiere May 24 at the Cannes Film Festival before hitting theaters in June, chronicles Presley’s life and music, his iconic style as well as that of the era. It stars Austin Butler as Presley’s lead role, Oscar winner Tom Hanks as his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker, and Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla, among others.
Hints of the collaboration surfaced at the last Met Gala, when actors including Butler, DeJonge, Kacey Musgraves, Kelvin Harrison Jr., as well as Luhrmann, Martin and Priscilla herself, all showed up on the red carpet in wearing custom looks from Prada. which channeled the music star’s love of bling.
“At the center of the Elvis story is the legendary love story of Elvis and Priscilla. The beauty and iconic style of Priscilla Presley have left an indelible mark on contemporary culture,” Martin said.
“As a result, it was important to Baz and I that we stayed true to that heritage by not only emulating Ms. Presley’s actual clothing, but finding a modern way to connect the public to her distinctive and historic style. It was wonderful for Baz and I to collaborate creatively with Miuccia again,” she added.
The creative process involved studying the Presleys’ style and delving into the Prada and Miu Miu archives, where she found similarities and sources of inspiration “to translate the Presleys’ historical garments into the costumes that would be in the movie,” Martin explained. .
Elvis Presley’s signature swing style has been given the Prada treatment, including a red-purple no-lapel suit featuring a dramatic collar. The brocade pantsuit and flowing top covered in beads and fringe that Priscilla Presley wore to a concert in Las Vegas in the late ’60s has been updated in a more contemporary take on the film, nodding a look at Miu Miu’s signature pearls and crystals, while Prada’s painterly checks from the Spring 1996 collection were worked into a geometric skirt suit in bright orange.
Other iconic looks from Elvis’ partner, such as the full-skirted tweed dress worn over a mohair sweater and layered under a brown suede jacket worn for the NBC Elvis Special, were also reimagined for the film.
This is the third time the trio have collaborated on costume design. Prada also created exclusive fashion for Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby” in 2013 and for the film “Romeo + Juliet” in 1996.
In both titles, fashion played a central role in defining the characters’ personalities and proved the Italian designer’s ability to reinterpret period style with a contemporary twist.
