Doctor Who community backs fans’ Dalek costume after criticism
Andrew Dobson received a wave of support from Doctor Who fans after he posted a post criticizing a photo of his son in a homemade Dalek costume.
Dobson, who regularly posts photos of his son disguised as one of Doctor Who’s most formidable villains, tweeted on May 18 that he had received a “charming DM from a ‘real fan’.”
He added: “It wasn’t so much the criticism that upset me, but rather the incorrect use of ‘your’. I feel the distress caused by the whip in the wrong hand – but my son was only 18 months old and much wiser now.
Well that’s a lovely DM from a “true fan”, received this morning. 🤣
It wasn’t so much the reviews that upset me, but rather the incorrect use of “your”.

The “real fan” had told Dobson “to stop posting pictures of this kid in his shitty Dalek costume – he’s not even holding the power weapon in his right hand.” Your embarrassing Doctor Who fans. Quit Twitter and leave the fandom to true fans who care about the show. “
Following his tweet, Dobson received a wave of support from fandom, including American Gods and Good Omens author Neil Gaiman (who also wrote two episodes of Doctor Who, The Doctor’s Wife and Nightmare in Silver).
“True Doctor Who fans know you can hold the whip in either hand. As long as you remember to say ‘Exterminate’ or something that looks vaguely like you are a real Dalek, ”Gaiman tweeted.

Dalek actor and operator Barnaby Edwards also contributed with his insistence that Dobson’s son “would make a good Dalek.”
Speaking with some authority on this, I can say to your son: YOU WILL MAKE A GOOD DALEK.

The healthy exchange led Dobson to thank the fans for supporting the young fan.
“Blimey, it’s blown up,” he tweeted. “Thanks everyone for the kind words – this is the real fandom. I certainly haven’t taken the DM personally and you never know what the sender is going through in the real world to feel so angry or upset.
Dobson added that “there will be more pictures” of his son and his “Dalek house” in the future.
