Marvel reveals Darkhawk’s new costume, relaunch details
Darkhawk fans were promised a new chapter in the character’s life thanks to his 30th anniversary one-shot, Heart of the Hawk # 1, and now we have a preview of what’s to come for the character. fan favorite Marvel hero. The Next Era for Darkhawk will begin in an all-new Darkhawk limited series in August, and at the helm are writer Kyle Higgins and artist Juanan Ramirez, who will also feature an absolutely stunning character overhaul of Pepe Larraz. It will also pave the way for a new person in the armor, as Chris Powell sacrificed himself at the end of Heart of the Hawk, and now a new character named Connor Young will inherit the mantle.
As you can see in Marvel’s Larraz designs on the next slide, the costume is gorgeous, with a black, silver and red color scheme and wings made of pink energy emanating from the costume. His gauntlets also feature red compartments that glow when his energy claws are drawn, and he still looks deadly.
In a new interview, Higgins was asked why now is the time for a new Darkhawk. “I wouldn’t say the decision to bring in a new heir was so much a matter of ‘time’, as much as it’s a direction that really intrigued me,” Higgins said. “Over the past six years, from the Power Rangers and the Winter Soldier to Ultraman and now Radiant Black, I have truly fallen in love with building contemporary superheroes, with origins for our time. This current generation. And so, in thinking of a character like Darkhawk, who was always crafted with the contemporary Everyman lens, it made sense to think about what a teenager might be right now. And then, to dig deeper, what a teenager who is destined for greatness and who is eager to achieve so that he can give back to his community … what it is when that path seems closed. For good. What do you do then? How do you reinvent yourself and find yourself you have a goal? When what you were supposed to do, you can’t anymore? “
There are Tokusatsu vibes to the costume and approach, and there are a lot of elements of Darkhawk that fit naturally into the genre.
“Some of the elements are similar, at least aesthetically,” Higgins said. “A staple of the Tokusatsu genre is the transformative hero archetype – Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, Ultraman – and Darkhawk, with his body swap dynamic, certainly fits that mold. I also find that I really respond to the elements. the most moving and spiritual of a lot of Tokusatsu. And I think when you have cosmic elements, those two elements can be a good mix. So, we can tackle some of that in Darkhawk. Plus, different weapon manifestations, shapes and tons of magenta energy. We’re going to have fun in New York. Especially when some contemporary web head goes by … “
As for the new character holding the mantle, there’s a lot to explore with Connor Young, who is on the cusp of a lucrative NBA career when he receives a sudden medical diagnosis that turns his world upside down.
“As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Darkhawk – and Chris Powell – my approach to the mantle and the book in general comes from the same place as some of my other recent superhero work: building something new and contemporary,” while remaining respectful of what has happened before, “Higgins said.” And, to stay true to the spirit of the concept, pushing it in a way that takes full advantage of its potential. Hopefully for Darkhawk, we’ll take body-swapping-with-an-android-but-still-controlling-with-your-consciousness-despite-not-being-genetically compatible, in new and quite different directions. And at the heart of it is Connor Young. And the sudden medical diagnosis that changed her whole life. “
“The Darkhawk tech, the android, his weapons, etc. all have a cosmic sci-fi twist. But first and foremost, Connor will focus on what he knows and cares about: Earth. New York. Woodlawn Heights. Her daddy and friends. And now, too, navigating this life-changing diagnosis, “Higgins said.” But, that’s where the cosmic and the down-to-earth begin to Joining Up: The way Darkhawk technology works, a user does not actually transform into a Darkhawk. What happens is that they instantly transport and swap places with an Android, which the user – in the case of humans due to their biology and incompatibilities with technology – still controls with their consciousness. “
“So what happens when this user has neurodegenerative disease? How does that affect their abilities? Their ability to sync with the android? Are there any improvements? What does this mean for his multiple sclerosis? All of this is behind this new Darkhawk, ”Higgins said.
As for the new design, it modernizes an already fantastic look, and Higgins believes it’s this look that has kept Darkhawk a fan favorite.
“Darkhawk’s design is bold and striking. There’s a reason the character has really lasted for the past 30 years, although he’s rarely seen. And I think a big part of that is just how good it is. his look is memorable. In my opinion, the look of a new superhero is 90% of the battle to create a character who has the potential to stand the test of time. To become potentially iconic, they must have the iconic look. Darkhawk is that to me. So as Android armor modernized approached, Pepe Larraz was enough to honor us with his immense design skills. The results speak for themselves – they are so ridiculously low. cool. Juanan, I’ve known him for a while, and I worked together on a few small projects that never really came to fruition (yet). So when Marvel included him as an option for Darkhawk, I was really excited about the prospect of building this with him. the was so much fun, ”Higgins said.
