Mohali: To shoot stunts, four teenagers turn to stealing bikes, detained
Four teenagers who stole motorcycles for bike stunts to gain attention on social media have been apprehended by Sohana police.
All four are 15 or 16 years old and live in the slums of Zirakpur and Kharar. Their parents, who work as daily bets, are from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, police said
Sohana Station Officer (SHO) Gurjeet Singh said on July 16 that they had received complaints that two motorbikes had been stolen from Rurka village and Aerocity.
“The investigation led us to these minors and they were arrested at a checkpoint in Sector 82 on Tuesday evening. Three stolen motorbikes were recovered from them on the spot. During the interrogation, they confessed to having stolen three others motorbikes and hiding them near the village of Papri in bushes. Upon reaching the area, we recovered four more motorbikes,” the SHO said.
He added that teenagers would recognize rural areas for the presence of CCTV cameras and steal motorbikes where there were none.
After stealing the motorbikes, they would go on car rides and film bike stunts on their cellphones to upload to social media, he added.
All four were convicted under section 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). They were presented to court and sent to a juvenile home in Hoshiarpur.
Two teenagers detained for stealing phones
Meanwhile, Chandigarh police have apprehended two minors, aged 14 and 16, for stealing mobile phones.
They were arrested following a complaint from a resident of Hallomajra, whose mobile phone was seized by two young people on a scooter on 17 July.
The victim, Arvind Yadav, was targeted near the Colony Number 4 bus stop in the industrial area. On his complaint, the police had registered a case under Section 379-A (Kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code on Tuesday.
After scanning CCTV footage in the area, police on Wednesday arrested two minors for the crime.
Besides Arvind’s phone, the police recovered two other cell phones as well as the scooter used for the crime. The scooter was later found stolen in Baltana. The duo were sent to a juvenile home by a court.
