The directors lead the way for the 42nd annual London Critics’ Circle Film Awards.

When Thursday’s nominations announced, Jane Campion’s psychological western The power of the dog walked away with nine nominations, ahead of that of first director Maggie Gyllenhaal The lost girl, with six, and Joanna Hogg’s cine-memoir The Remembrance Part II, with five.

More than 180 critics from print, online and broadcast media voted for this year’s nominations, which were announced by British actors Joanna Vanderham and Gwilym Lee at the May Fair Hotel in London. The May Fair will also host the Circle’s award ceremony, where the winners will be announced on February 6, 2022.

“Even though the theaters were closed for half of this year, our members were still watching movies,” says Rich Cline, President of the Film Section of Critics’ Circle. “On the nomination papers, voters nominated 204 feature films, of which 51 are on shortlists. Because our members see so many films, our nominations tend to be a bit different from other groups, finding a diverse selection of worthy talent in studio blockbusters as well as low budget indie’s.
