Why comic book-specific superhero costumes make more sense in MCU Phase 4
The MCU laid the groundwork for vibrant, comic book-faithful superhero costumes that embrace their origins, message, and the heroes’ motivations.
Comic book-faithful superhero costumes make more sense during the MCU Phase 4 than ever before. One of the most iconic elements that superheroes are known for is their famous costumes. Spider-Man wouldn’t be the same without his iconic mask, and one of the first images that come to mind when Iron Man is mentioned is his red and gold armor. Sometimes these clothes serve a very specific purpose, as is the case with Doctor Strange’s Levitating Cloak, and sometimes a character’s look comes naturally, like the Hulk’s ragged but still indestructible pants.
When comic book characters jump into live action, most of their looks need to be updated. Some items are dropped, such as Thor’s helmet or Hawkeye’s mask, which would be impractical during their MCU battles. Live-action costumes also need to tone down some elements, such as Captain America’s helmet wings and Vision’s colorful design. However, there comes a time when it makes more sense for these characters to wear costumes that best represent their personalities, motivations, and the environment they thrive in – which naturally translates into vibrant colors and designs. more extravagant.

The Phase 4 titles feature some of the most accurate superhero costumes yet. The Captain America costume of Sam Wilson in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is almost an exact replica of its comic book counterpart. WandaVision finally gave Wanda Maximoff her official scarlet witch costume, complete with a cape and iconic helmet; more, WandaVision also found a clever way to pay homage to the comic book costumes of Wanda, Pietro, Vision, Billy and Tommy. Now Clint Barton, Kate Bishop and Echo are donning their comic book costumes in the Hawk Eye Disney + show, while Shang-Chi wears an intricate scale costume Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings and Kamala Khan costume sports a shiny costume and domino mask Ms. Marvel.
Some viewers have described Sam Wilson’s Captain America costume as too toy-like compared to Steve Rogers’ fan-favorite SHIELD uniform and his tattered dark suit from Avengers: Infinity War. But the point of the new Captain America costume is for Sam to embrace red, white and blue to transform American iconography. There is also no reason for the new Captain America costume to be worn out, as it is brand new and made with state of the art Wakandan materials. Plus, there’s an explanation in the universe for every character in Phase 4 to wear colorful, comic-book-true costumes, even the flashiest.
In WandaVision, Wanda Maximoff got her final costume once she fulfilled the Scarlet Witch’s Prophecy. Kate Bishop and Ms. Marvel make their heroic debuts in a world where superheroes have been commonplace for several years. In fact, an important part of Kamala Khan’s story is that she’s a superhero fangirl. It is almost necessary for an overly relentless teenage superhero to want to stand out and become an icon in his own right. It would also make sense for each character wearing armor in Armor wars to try to outdo the rest with their own design. The MCU has come to a point where there is no longer a need for new superhero costumes to go to great lengths to appear gritty or grounded at all costs. In a universe where witches, alien warlords, and talking trees are tied, colorful costumes are unlikely to be the most unrealistic thing.
Of course, the MCU has to choose what’s best for each specific movie and TV show, and many future releases like Moon knight and Blade could use more muted costumes. But as Taika Waititi, James Gunn, and even the Russo Brothers demonstrated with the MCU installments they’ve made, the craziest aspects of the comics can be translated into live-action pretty accurately. This opens up some exciting perspectives, such as the unique personality of each X-Men mutant and the highly anticipated classic Wolverine costume reveal. With the advent of MCU Phase 4Gone are the days when all costumes had to be tactical, all colors had to be toned down, and superhero movies had to live under the stylistic rule of late 90s / early 2000s movies.
